Headfield CE Junior School

Physical Education

Headfield Junior School has some of the best facilities for the provision of PE in the area. We have 2 separate areas for outdoor PE as well as a trim trail and a number of ‘fitness’ machines for children to use during playtimes. We also have a dance studio and an area for gymnastics.

We believe that physical education (PE) and sport are an integral part of education – equipping children with the skills and knowledge to lead an active and healthy life. All pupils learn about the importance of health and fitness through gymnastics, dance and games, which are taught each term. Year 4 also go swimming on a Tuesday. Each class is allocated the dance studio or the hall as well as one of the outdoor sports areas each week.  This allows us to provide up to 2 hours of high quality PE per week. We encourage sporting competition whilst ensuring that all children are given opportunities to participate in a range of sports activities and have access to a broad and balanced PE curriculum.

All children should bring the appropriate PE kit at the start of the week ready for their lessons.

 Boccia Festival

Yesterday we had 9 super stars who attended a Boccia Festival at Batley Sports Centre, the children represented our school brilliantly and had an amazing time competing against other schools.

Sport Leader Training

On the 24th October 10 children were chosen to become Sports Leaders. They spent the day training with other children from other schools and worked with trained adults to develop their skills as Sports Leaders.

Extra-curricular activities

At Headfield we provide a range of extra-curricular activities. Clubs run both after school and during lunch times offering a range of opportunities to our children. Most of these clubs run through-out the year although some of the clubs run for 1/2 a term and are designed to help develop the skills of the children ready for some of the many competitions we enter against other schools.

Sports Leaders At Break and Lunchtimes

We have 10 Sport Leaders who were trained earlier this year and they help to make break and lunchtimes even more interesting by helping other children play games sensibly and safely.

Sports Premium

The government is spending over £450 million on improving the provision of PE and sport in primary schools. As part of the funding we receive from the Government, we have a specialist PE coach who works alongside the teachers planning, delivering and assessing lessons. This allows both high quality lessons to be taught to our children as well as professional development for our staff. It also allows us to buy in specialist coaches to work with our competitive teams and the transport to these competitions.

School Games Mark

We have recently been awarded the Silver Sports mark. This award is in recognition of high quality PE lessons being taught in school and the passion and commitment of both staff and pupils.
